KNIT was originally founded as the Faculty of Technology in the year 1976 by the Kamla Nehru Memorial Trust. Subsequently, in 1979, it came under the auspices of the Government of Uttar Pradesh, with the objective of establishing a comprehensive Engineering Institute in the Eastern Uttar Pradesh region, commonly referred to as the Awadh region. In 1983, it underwent formal registration as an independent society and was rechristened as the Kamla Nehru Institute of Technology.
